Publishing a book is one of the most rewarding things you can do. It is also easy to spend money in the wrong places. Here are seven mistakes we see first-time authors make, and how to avoid each one.

1. Skipping professional editing

Friends and family are encouraging, but they rarely catch structural problems or consistent grammar errors. An editor sees your manuscript the way a reader will. Budget for at least one professional edit and a separate proofread.

2. Designing the cover last

Your cover is your book’s first advertisement. Plan it early so that your title, subtitle and cover work together, and so you can use the cover to promote the book before launch.

3. Printing too many copies

It is tempting to print thousands of copies to reduce the unit cost. Unless you already have confirmed buyers, start with a smaller run, sell, and reprint. Unsold books are expensive.

4. Ignoring the e-book

An e-book costs little to produce and lets readers anywhere in the world buy your book instantly. It also gives you a lower-priced option for new readers.

5. No marketing plan

A book does not sell itself. Decide before launch who the book is for, where those readers spend time, and how you will reach them: church groups, schools, social media, events and bookstores.

6. Not getting an ISBN

An ISBN identifies your book and is needed by many bookstores and libraries. It makes your book look and function like a professionally published title.

7. Going it alone

The most expensive publishing decisions are the ones made without advice.

A short consultation before you spend can save you far more than it costs. That is why we walk with authors through every stage, from manuscript to market.

Business Name or Limited Company: Which CAC Registration Is Right for You? https://jakanopo.com/business-name-or-limited-company/ Tue, 04 Aug 2026 08:00:00 +0000 https://jakanopo.com/business-name-or-limited-company/ Choosing the right structure matters. When you are ready to make your business official with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), the first question is which type of registration to choose. The two most common options for small businesses are a business name and a private limited company.

Business name

A business name registration suits sole traders and partnerships who want a simple, affordable way to operate under a registered name. It is generally quicker and cheaper. The owner and the business are not legally separate, so the owner is personally responsible for the business’s debts.

Private limited company (Ltd)

A limited company is a separate legal entity. It can own property, enter contracts and be sued in its own name. It usually gives more credibility with larger clients, banks and investors, but it comes with more compliance obligations.

Questions to ask yourself

  • Do I plan to bid for contracts with larger organisations?
  • Will I bring in partners or investors?
  • How much risk does my business carry?
  • Can I keep up with annual filings?

If you are unsure, speak with us before you register. We will help you choose the structure that fits your goals and avoid paying for what you do not need.

Your website is often the first place a potential customer checks after hearing about you. It should answer their questions quickly and make it easy to contact you.

A clear headline

Within five seconds, a visitor should know what you do, who you serve and where you are located.

Fast loading on mobile data

Most of your visitors are on their phones, often on mobile data. Compressed images and a lightweight design make a real difference.

WhatsApp and click-to-call

Nigerian customers love to chat. A visible WhatsApp button and tappable phone numbers turn visitors into conversations.

Proof that you are real

Show your address, CAC registration, photos of your team and genuine client feedback. Trust is what converts.

Google Business Profile

Link your website to a verified Google Business Profile so you appear when people search for your service in Port Harcourt, Abuja or wherever you operate.

Many business owners start strong on social media, post every day for two weeks, and then disappear. Consistency, not volume, is what builds trust.

Choose content pillars

Pick three to five themes you will always post about: for example, your services, customer results, tips, behind-the-scenes, and offers.

Batch your content

Set aside one session each week to design graphics and write captions for the whole week. Then schedule them.

Post fewer times, better

Three thoughtful posts a week will do more for your brand than seven rushed ones.

Measure what matters

Track enquiries and messages, not just likes. Review monthly and do more of what works.

Want to stay visible online?

Content, adverts and page management that bring real enquiries.
